I walked into the temple and married my one true love! Both of us were almost 22 years old, yet still ready to make a lifelong commitment to loving each other. We've succeeded so far! We've raised three daughters, seen four new grandchildren enter the fold and have the best English Bulldog granddog ever! Our sons-in-law are really great guys that we are so proud to have in the family. It's crazy to think of all the things we've done together, knowing most people going in never thought it would last.
Some of the things happening around the world thirty four years ago:
Gerald Ford was president. He tripped and fell a lot. Then he retired a stone's throw from here. His wife opened a HUGE drug and alcohol recovery center in Palm Springs.
The merchant ship U.S. Mayaguez was recaptured from Cambodia's Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge did not lose power in Vietnam until the birth of our first child some three years later in 1978.
The Vietnam war was coming to an end. Saigon had fallen just a few short days ago, April 30th. War was on all our minds. Edited to add: How strange is it that the photographer, Hugh Van Es, a Dutch photojournalist who covered the Vietnam War and recorded the most famous image of the fall of Saigon in 1975 — a group of people scaling a ladder to a CIA helicopter on a rooftop — died this morning?
Trini Lopez, Laini Kazan, Paul Rudd, Emmitt Smith and Brian Eno were celebrating birthdays. Frank Zappa's son turned one.
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals 4 to 2.
Junko Tabei was almost to the top of Mt. Everest. She became the first woman to ever reach the top on May 16th.
Inflation was on the rise: As quoted by consumer reporter: "I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, its going to be impossible to buy a weeks groceries for $20.00." I remember the first weeks worth of groceries I bought for us as a newlywed couple was $10 a bag. I bought three bags worth of groceries.
Gasoline was 65 cents a gallon.
Freddie Prinze was starring in Chico and the Man.
May 15th, 1975 was a Thursday.
We ate lunch, after our wedding at McDonalds on Santa Monica Blvd. We met Jack Carter the actor there. I have his autograph.
The number one song that day was a Tony Orladndo and Dawn song called He Don't Love You (Like I Love You). I don't even remember the song!
Our song was Day after Day by Badfinger. It was released the month we began dating in 1971. We are still that cheesy couple that has to make eye contact and smile when we hear it on the radio. Yes, my heart still skips a beat.
I was wearing a wrap skirt and yellow french t and sandals. He was in his navy seafarers denims and a 70s style polo shirt (not an Izod)and Frye boots. We had changed in anticipation of the reception later (didn't want to have to press my dress again). At the reception I was in my gown with a fully beaded bolero (hand beaded by my mom) and he was in a tux with top hat and tails. It was a crack up. My attendants were my sisters, a cousin, and a friend from high school. His attendants were guys he knew from church.
My colors were white and (Navy)blue. The flowers were bachelor buttons for their lovely blue and white roses. I carried a single white rose for my bouquet. One love - one rose. I wanted my attendants in navy dresses but my mother would have none of it. She stated it was to funereal for a wedding. Yeah, I got in to FIDM (didn't attend, that's a regret!) because of my sense of fashion, but what did I know? They ended up in cream colored dresses with small blue flowers. Just one of the compromises between my mother and I.
Our reception was held the same day. We had over 400 guests present. There was a full buffet dinner with a five tiered cake and seven satellite cakes in all different flavors. I got the bite of cake my groom served me. The rest was eaten by guests. We were at the reception until 10 p.m. The next day we went to Disneyland. Our real honeymoon wasn't until three weeks later.
We climbed into our 1966 Volkswagen Van and camped throughout Utah and Idaho for three weeks, rarely sleeping in the same city for a night. It was a great western adventure. We had a blast! Waking up to see the sunrise in Zion National Park was beautiful. Then seeing the clear blue water of Bear Lake in Idaho a few days later was awesome. I had never seen a lake with such clarity in my life. Wow.
I was working at Alpha Beta, a grocery store, as a clerk/bookkeeper. He was in college and working part time but I can't remember where. He was in a band. He's a bassist.
We've made our own little history in these 34 years. Let's hear it for another 34! I'm up for it sweetie, how about you? (he says "I should live so long!")

Love is all around
Success. Most define it in terms of wealth, position, or power. Mine was defined today in a way. One of my daughters graciously told the world she had inherited my hands. And was to have inherited them. Whenever someone I love pays me a compliment, enjoys a measure of fulfillment through a childhood teaching I count it as success.
“Do we exemplify [a] legacy of love? Do our homes? Bernadine Healy, in a commencement address, gave this counsel: ‘As a physician, who has been deeply privileged to share the most profound moments of people’s lives including their final moments, let me tell you a secret. People facing death don’t think about what degrees they have earned, what positions they have held, or how much wealth they have accumulated. At the end, what really matters is who you loved and who loved you. That circle of love is everything, and is a great measure of a past life. It is the gift of greatest worth’ (“On Light and Worth: Lessons from Medicine,” Commencement address, Vassar College, 29 May 1994, 10, Special Collections).”
How is success defined for you?

Proof that 4 year olds have more fun
This morning when Dad went to get his shoes. This is what he found:
My response was to take a picture of course. Then to caption it. "I'm not sure what dad was doing last night, but his shoes sure had fun!"
The four year old is such a blessing around here. There is very little she does that makes you want to holler. Mostly she just add a dimension that you find yourself smiling and laughing at the simplest things.

Ozzy came to visit!
Yes, and can I tell you how fun he is? His "parents" came too. They were down to attend a Rise Against concert Friday night. So we got to take Ozzy with us trick or treating.
We first tried this costume on him.
No. Ozzy just looked well, um, the youngest one said "like he's being raped by a pig", and I guess that says it all. So we decided to go with the orange shirt stating "this is my costume" on it. He was the hit of trunk or treat. Everyone just loved him.
Saturday was spent at Balboa Park with a group of English Bulldog owners. Lunch was at El Indio's. mmmm. Next time they come, they'll probably join us in Arizon. Time for everyone to be at the ranch!

Projects keeping me busy
I never realized how much time could be consumed with a four year old in the house. The girl runs circles around me! With a hundred questions at a time. It is incredible. It is wonderful to have her here. She has such a positive attitude, I love being with her.
She has made me more responsible with my time. I have begun making my lists again, and things are getting done. I am half way through making new stroller pads and covers for the stroller we purchased for $25. It will be as good as new by Wednesday.
What other things am I working on? New items for a new etsy shop coming soon. I must keep it a secret until the launch, then you can all see!
I've been working as a video assistant for my husband on a project for his works website. We have been filming nurses - telling their stories - about what it is like to work as a hospice nurse. It has been extremely interesting.
I've begun a small quilt. I saw a picture of a quilt on a website a woman had done. I loved the quilt, it's a tree with leaves surrounding it. I fell in love with it and am beginning to work on the applique process tomorrow.
Percolating in the background are some ideas for a few YouTube videos my sis and I may make. They will be funny, informative and all about cooking and homekeeping. It looks as if it might be great fun.
Tomorrow is the husband's birthday. He joins me in age! Yay. I am no longer the old woman! We will have a nice dinner and a few gifts he doesn't know about. We'll finish off the evening installing a new garbage disposal. Whoopee!

Valuable Information, Just for you!
What is the best time to go to the emergency room? before 4 a.m. Just how do I know? Let me tell ya. In my best rendition of "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" an homage to Laura Numeroff.
When you get up in the middle of the night because the cat won't quit meowing, turn on a light!
Because if you don't you might be off a few steps in your brain memory of the layout of your usual choice of seating.
And when your brain memory is off just a bit, you might step on something you don't expect to be there, because you thought you had put your tools in their proper place.
And then if you do step on those tools, you might nearly sever your pinky toe on your right foot. And bleed a lot.
And then you have to go wake up your wife, who is nearly deaf, by shaking her and asking "will you please help me? (as if she could hear you struggling all along)".
And then she'll get up, completely unaware she's going to find blood, from your foot, everywhere! And look at your toe, see that it is going to almost fall off, and insist you go to the emergency room. (keep in mind it was 3 a.m. and she was souuuund asleep)
And you insist it will be okay. Then she'll rinse the wound in peroxide, and then put triple antibiotic gel on it and still insist you go to the ER.
And you'll call the 24 hour duty nurse for your health plan and ask if your wife knows what she is talking about. And she'll say "yes."
And then you'll get in the car, drive to the ER. They'll look at your wound and give you a lecture about putting your tools up, or at least turning on a light. (and possibly putting that cat to sleep) And then you'll get stitches and a shot. All while your wife is getting the insurance details to the proper people up front.
Then she'll be allowed to go see you. And check on your progress. And find out that if you go before 4 a.m. that they'll be done with you, and ready to send you home.
So if the cat wakes you up in the middle of the night because he is lonely, please turn on a light. Or find out if your ER is as efficient as the one we went to this morning. (it wasn't in our town.)

Oh fun, can I come too?
Yes, I know you'll all want to beg to go with me today. I have been given the opportunity to spend lots of money this morning. I get to hang around with experts and hear about features and their benefits and all the different products. Then get to choose which I think is best. Oh and did I mention I get to spend a lot of money. Money we don't have, but the husband insists I go do this for myself.
Where am I going? I don't even have to leave town. Yes, my small town has everything I need in this regard. In fact, after visiting with my mother in law and her friend (both in their 80s) the other day, I have chosen the perfect vendor. They highly recommend them. Oh, and the place is filled with men.
Men, experts, lots of money. Who knew tire shopping could be this fun? I told you you'd want to go with me.
